Adulting 101: 5 Tips on Making New Friends

Making new friends when you’re an adult is not as easy as when you were a toddler in kindergarten. However, if you feel like you have no close friends or you have sadly fallen out of touch with your former crew, making new friends is one of the skills you should start learning. Here’s adulting tips on making new friends.

Cherrydtv shows you how you can do that.

Most people tend to have a set circle of close friends once they reach adulthood. However if you are one of the rare people who wake up one day and realize that you really don’t have any friends, this piece is for you. Granted, attempts to meet new people won’t always be successful each and every time. There may be some instances when you feel awkward, embarrassed, and pathetic, even.
Just remember that making and keeping new friends is absolutely essential for your health, which is why you need to take a proactive approach in finding your tribe.

Here are 5 tips to get you started

Join a group

Whether its a book club or a volunteer group at the local soup kitchen, you will find that activities where adults get together to do something good for the community are a good place to start making new friendships. Choose activities that suit your interest so you’ll be motivated to show up. This is also a good way to meet people who have the same interests as you do.

Go up and talk

Going up to talk to a complete stranger sounds intimidating because it is! However, you might be pleasantly surprised that not all people are wary about complete strangers coming up to them for a chat. Choose a safe, open space, such as a park or a cafe. You could start chatting with the person next to you on the bus, or the guy next in line as you wait for coffee. Do this often enough, and chatting people up in public will be second nature in no time.

Use your kids or your pets

Kids are a great excuse to meet other parents. The same is true for pets. Meet like-minded pet owners by going to the dog park and chatting up the other furparents. The good thing about having kids or pets is that there’s a ton of icebreaker topics that just naturally flow between parents and pet-owners, so getting a conversation going won’t be that hard.

Use social media

Social media is such a great tool for making connections online and offline. If you are on Facebook, take a more active approach when it comes to messaging people, commenting on posts, and just connecting with people who you don’t see every day. Sometimes making new friends in adulting is as easy as rekindling relationships with old acquaintances and even former friends, and all it takes is a short Hello on Messenger. You can use these online conversations to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and hopefully, make plans for real-life meet-ups.

Get outside

Sometimes, the trick to meeting new people is as simple as leaving the house. Perhaps the only reasons why you have no friends is because nobody sees you. You may even be one of those people who receive invites to parties and gatherings from time to time, but you always say no. Time to give this mindset a 180 degree shift and start appreciating your opportunities to go out and be social. All it takes is just one afternoon spent outside. Interacting with people on the street, at the local store, or at the park, for you to meet the people who are destined to be your closest pals.

Finding new friends in adulting can be intimidating and scary, even. However, adults need friendships and social interaction, and the only way to do that is to put yourself out there. So take the first step, go up to that person, and start making friends.
